The World of Search is Changing:
Your website, Search visibility, and how SEO Really Works

I often get questions along the lines of:

“My website is live — why isn’t it ranking on Google yet?”

I wanted to take a moment to explain how search works today, what your website already includes, and where SEO fits into the picture.

Your website is SEO-ready — and actively indexed

Every website I build is created with a strong SEO-ready foundation, and importantly, it is proactively submitted to search engines.

That means:

  • Your site is indexed on Google and Bing
  • Pages are resubmitted whenever meaningful changes are made
  • Search engines are notified, rather than left to “find” the site themselves

Many agencies don’t do this at all. Instead they wait for search engines to discover changes in their own time. Your site does not rely on that passive approach.

Alongside indexing, your website is built with:

  • Clean, well-structured code
  • Mobile-friendly layouts
  • Clear page hierarchy and headings

This creates a solid technical base for visibility.

SEO-ready vs SEO (an important distinction)

A useful way to think about it is this:

SEO-ready means your website

  • SEO is the ongoing work that helps it actually perform well

SEO involves:

  • Researching how people search for your services
  • Improving and expanding website content
  • Answering common customer questions
  • Building relevance, authority, and trust over time

An SEO plugin on its own doesn’t do this — it simply provides tools to support the process.

SEO

Why a website may not rank strongly without SEO

Even when a site is indexed correctly, search engines still look for:

  • Clear explanations of what you do
  • Content that directly answers user questions
  • Signals of expertise and trust
  • Ongoing improvement and relevance

Without active SEO work, most websites tend to appear mainly for:

  • Business name searches
  • Very limited or low-competition terms

This is normal and doesn’t indicate a problem with the website itself.

Local search and Google Maps

For many businesses, visibility doesn’t just come from websites — it comes from local search.

This includes:

  • Google Maps
  • Local search results
  • Your Google Business Profile

Your website provides the foundation that supports local search, but strong local visibility also depends on:

  • An optimised business profile
  • Consistent information
  • Relevant website content that reinforces services and location

SEO work often connects the website and local presence so they support each other.

A quick note on how search is changing

Search engines are also changing how results are displayed.

Increasingly, they:

  • Answer questions directly
  • Use AI-generated summaries
  • Pull content from websites they clearly understand

This is where AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) comes in.

AEO builds on SEO by helping your content:

  • Explain services clearly
  • Answer common customer questions
  • Be structured in a way AI systems can confidently use

Your website is built to support this — but it requires content work over time.

I’m always happy to have a straightforward, no-pressure conversation.
